Wood drying. Hydro-thermal process
As a natural material, wood sometimes tends to continue with ‘life’ even when it’s no longer a living tree.
To minimize it, at sanisio from time to time we cook the raw pieces.
This hydro-thermal process is carried out for two reasons.
First thing is that it significantly reduces the time wooden material needs to dry naturally.
This way already 2-3 weeks after the wood drying treatment the wood is ready for further processing. With wood drying done this way it is possible to turn completely fresh wood into a ready-to-use material in a very short time.
The second accompanying result of hydro-thermal processing of raw wood is stabilizing the internal tensions in the structure of every single piece of wood.
In other words, wood drying is done to extract the so-called bound water and structural humidity which reduces the future chance of cracking.
We do it once in a while. We cook the timbers.
Cooking it in the alkaline bath is carried out by placing a certain amount of ash in the water. This amount is an experiential fact and depends on the size and quantity of the wood being cooked.
Timing is also an empirical data but it takes a minimum of 4-5 hours. During this process the tannin from the wood comes out.
This is the reason why with wood drying contrasts and color intensity of the wood to some extent weak.
